This morning, we are docked in Dakar, capital of Senegal. There were a lot of shops set up on the dock waiting for the passengers to come out and shop.

We visited Senegal on our world cruise a few years ago where we visited the Rose Lake and saw a dance performance. Today we skipped the ship’s morning excursions and opted to do a tour with Tara in the afternoon.
The first stop of our afternoon tour was the city’s main square where we learned a
bit about the background of the country and took a few pictures.
The next stop was the main market. It was in a large building from the French colonial period.
It was in the afternoon so it probably wasn’t as crowded as it could have been. It was rather dark inside...
and there were shops set up around the outside of the building.

The next stop was the Grand Mosque Massalikul Jinaan.
The interior was a lovely...
with a dome covered in tile...
and a massive prayer hall.
We saw a lot of murals around the city.
It was beginning to get dark but we braved a massive, very long traffic jam (by now it was rush hour) along the coastline...
to the edge of town where we visited the African Renaissance Monument. It sat high on hill overlooking the Atlantic. It had a very heroic with a Russian/Communist feel to it.
We also visited the museum in the base of the monument.
Unfortunately, the elevator up into the monument wasn’t working so we were unable go up to see the views from the top.
Paul, Tara and Dirk (also on our tour) took the long stairs
down so they could take more photos up to the monument. The rest of us took the bus down to the base
of the stairs.
